What Is a Yoco Card Machine?

Yoco is a South African-based payments processing company that supplies portable card machines and Point of Sale systems at a once-off purchase fee with no monthly rental fees charged.

The only fees you pay are small per-transaction fees of between 2.6-2.9% Ex. VAT. Jump to Card Machines List↓

Play Video about What is a Yoco Card Machine and How it works - Khumo Print Example.

And the best part? Yoco machines work with any South African bank debit/credit cards, including SASSA grant cards.

Also, you can use Yoco for a registered business or an informal one (non-registered businesses).

Unlike bank options, the requirements to own a Yoco card machine are simple – all you need is a valid South African ID or valid foreign passport, and an active South African bank account. Easy peasy, right?

Overall, Yoco’s low barriers of entry mean even you can easily purchase↗︎ and start using one, This is why Yoco is one of the most popular card processing companies for small businesses in South Africa.

List of 5 Yoco Card Machines Explained

The Yoco Go↗︎, Is an entry-level Point of Sale card machine (POS card machine), that works by pairing with your phone using Bluetooth and the free Yoco App.

The Yoco Go’s POS compatibility means that if you choose to purchase it, you may not need to buy another larger Yoco card machine when your business grows.

Instead, you can pair it with a larger POS solution to keep getting additional features and capabilities for your shop.

Since the design of the Yoco Go is basic, all the heavy lifting on managing transactions, sending receipts, issuing refunds, adding or updating products, and more are done directly from the free mobile Yoco App.

For the best experience in a busy business, I recommend using the Yoco Go alongside the Yoco App installed on a larger tablet or iPad, with a proper tablet stand that sits on your countertop table.

Yoco Go Review - Final Verdict

The Yoco Go↗︎ is only perfect for accepting card payments in business environments where customer traffic is predictable.

In busier business environments such as larger tuckshops and restaurants, this card machine is only best for use on a countertop till-point or a fixed spot where you will always have your phone/tablet and chargers close by.

Last, the Yoco Go, in my experience, gives no regrets.

It is built with the latest technology to ensure you can grow with it and continue to accept card payments with ease.

The only reason to probably skip the Yoco Go is if you need a card machine that doesn’t need to be paired with a phone.

For this reason, I recommend using the Yoco Neo↓, Yoco Khumo↓ or Khumo Print↓.

With the Yoco Khumo, The point of Sale Software is installed within the card machine itself,

And works very intuitively to the point that you will not see the need to ever use the Yoco App or Yoco’s POS software on laptops/desktops.

As for the overall functionality, The Yoco Khumo looks and works a lot more like a modern smartphone (that is only used to accept card payments from customers),

It has a full HD touchscreen interface, camera, mic, and speaker sensors, uses two Sim Cards, and connects to any home/office WiFi.

Once you have bought one, you can always play around with the settings and update the software as you wish.

Yoco Khumo Review - Final Verdict

Overall, I recommend the Yoco Khumo as an overall good sweet spot for every business in terms of price and overall functionality.

The perceived limitation of the Yoco Kumho can be that it cannot print slip receipts. Like any other Yoco machine released before it, it can only send digital receipts.

However, the inability to print receipts may not be a serious issue since most customers are now used to receiving digital receipts or hate paper receipts.

In case you really prefer a speedpoint card machine that can print receipts, The best Yoco Khumo alternatives are Khumo Print↓ and the Yoco Neo Plus↓.

If Not. Then just buy the Yoco Khumo. It is a very fast, and capable card machine for larger businesses.

Plus, Today you can also get a discount for it when you order directly from Yoco (See Available Discount Here↗︎).

In practice, you use the Khumo Print the same way you’d use the standard Yoco Khumo. Except you will need to keep replacing thermal print rolls whenever you run out.

Who is it for? Any small and large business looking for a capable standalone Yoco card reader machine for the long term.

Khumo Print Final Verdict

Without a doubt, The Yoco Khumo Print is a perfect Yoco machine that perfectly eliminates all your now and future card machine worries.

It carries all the benefits of the standard Yoco Khumo↑. Mainly, the freedom to have a printer-ready card machine that you can run all operations of your business from anywhere.

Plus it is blazing fast and satisfyingly large!

The only reason you might want to skip the Khumo Print should be that you prefer a POS card machine, that is standalone but can also print receipts.

Keep in mind, the differentiating factor is that the alternative card machine must be a POS card machine, to begin with.

For this reason, I recommend checking out the Yoco Neo Plus↓.

The Yoco Neo↗︎ is also a smart standalone card machine, that pairs with Yoco POS and that is high quality in built.

Why the Yoco Neo?
First, it integrates with Yoco POS (App and cloud desktop software), and also integrates with other industry POS software such as Lightspeed X-Series, Lightspeed K-Series, Loyverse, and SalonBridge.

Remember, the touchscreen versions (Yoco Khumo↑ and Khumo Print↑) do not integrate with Yoco’s or other POS.

The Yoco Neo, on the other hand, gives you the freedom to have both. i.e use it anywhere as a standalone card machine and-or in your shop with Yoco’s POS integration.

It doesn’t necessarily have a touchscreen display. But has a larger HD display that takes up nearly 40% of the front of the machine.

The screen is large enough and more useful than on the entry-level Yoco Go, allowing you to view and manage transactions of up to 3 days, navigate settings, and so on.

Plus, you can also use the Yoco Neo with Yoco’s App, which you can have installed on a dedicated tablet on your counter’s desk.

In terms of connectivity, the Yoco Neo is a fast, capable standalone POS device, with a built-in Ultrafast 4G SIM card, with Unlimited data from Yoco.

Will one sim card not give you issues? Technically No, The 4G SIM card inside the Yoco Neo is a Universal Sim Card. Meaning, it automatically connects to any strongest mobile networks in your area (MTN, Vodacom, Cell C, Telkom).

Also, because the Yoco Neo SIM is universal, the Neo doesn’t support WiFi connectivity. It is perfect as it is.

Who is it for? Any small and large business looking for a standalone card machine that can also be paired to Yoco’s POS (or supported POS) if necessary.

Yoco Card Machines Reviews

All Yoco credit card machines have an awe-inspiring built quality.

They are designed to be modern, elegant, compact, pocket-sized, and lightweight, making them perfect for use on the go or on the counter.

Yoco Go and Yoco Neo Design
Yoco Go and Yoco Neo Design | Cred. Yoco.com

In terms of built quality and durability, they are technically built to last and can sustain longevity through normal dirt, dust, and hip-level drops just like generic maths calculators and most mobile phones.

Just like any gadget of today, the touchscreen versions of Yoco card machines are obviously more prone to break if dropped than the mechanical versions of the card machines.

For extra care, Yoco also provides a free lanyard in their packaging to help you always keep your Yoco machine strapped to your body.

How does Yoco Card Machines Work (Features)

All Yoco credit machines basically do the same thing but operated differently depending on the particular card machine.

Here is a summary of how all Yoco card machines work:

  1. Yoco Go – POS card machine, works by pairing with a smartphone using Bluetooth and Yoco App.
  2. Yoco Khumo – Fully Standalone (Non-POS card machine), fully touchscreen operated, with built-in custom software, dual 4G SIM cards, No need to pair with Yoco POS.
  3. Khumo Print – Works exactly like Yoco Khumo, but with a built-in printer.
  4. Yoco Neo – POS card machine, that is standalone. built-in universal 4G Sim, you can choose to pair or not pair it with Yoco POS.
  5. Yoco Neo Plus – Works exactly like the Yoco Neo, but with a built-in printer.

What actually makes Yoco card machines stand out is that they are blazing fast! with the capabilities of processing payments instantly – in about 3 seconds.

If you have noticed, most generic brand card machines, are annoyingly glitchy and slow. Especially at smaller fuel stations, Indian and Pakistan shops.

So the fact that Yoco card machines are fast, and the best in connectivity is a really big deal,

This means you won’t find yourself in frustration, trying to force the card machine to process a payment.

Also, Yoco machines take card payments from any South African bank cards (including SASSA grant cards).

They all support any method of card payment method, i.e. card insert, card swipe, and card tap (tap and go) on all (VISA/MasterCard & VISA Electron cards).

However, They do not accept other types of international cards such as American Express – AMEX (AMEX is only supported on the Yoco Khumo↑ and Khumo Print↑ card machines)

Other cards not supported include Diners Club, Discover Card, China UnionPay, Entrust Bank, Japan Credit Bureau, Fleet Cards and Petrol Cards.

But this is not really a big issue since very few people ever use these.

If you need card machines that accept a wider range of other cards such as AMEX and Diners Club, then check out WAPPOint Card Machines↗︎.

Yoco also supports NFC mobile payments such as Samsung and Apple Pay. Meaning customers can just tap to pay with their phones.

For your convenience, Yoco also helps you turn your card reader machine into a complete point-of-sale solution by providing free online Point of Sale (PoS) software available online on desktops and a free Mobile App.

The mobile App runs only on Android and iOS devices – Android phones and tablets / iPhones and iPads.

Yoco portal

The online-based PoS software and mobile App are really what supercharges your business, and actually save you a bit of money from investing in dedicated Accounting Software for a Small Business↗︎.

The PoS and Yoco App allows you to sell products online and on social media through Payment Links and a Payment Gateway for online stores (Shopify, WordPress, Wix and other custom web platforms).

In addition, you can also use the Free PoS and Yoco’s App to Send Invoices (Yoco invoices), increase sales by Selling Gift Vouchers (Yoco vouchers), view and manage sales records, send digital receipts, accept tips, etc.

Yoco Machine Price

Yoco card machines are generally between R299 – R2999 depending on the time of purchase.

The price for buying a Yoco card machine is a once-off purchase, and there are no rental options provided.

Keep in mind that prices for Yoco card machines keep changing from time to time, and nobody really knows when there could be a bargain for Yoco Specials and for how long the discounts would last.

So far, These are the only Yoco discounts available to first-time buyers ordering using a Referral Discount Link.

Here are the current Yoco prices per card machine: ✅

So Which Yoco Machine Should You Choose?

When buying a Yoco card machine, It is important to understand if that particular card machine is a Point of Sale (POS) card machine or not.

So, what’s the difference? Well, a POS card machine can be paired with Yoco’s Point of Sale System/software to manage and track transactions (or other supported POS software such as like Vend, SalonBridge, TabletPos, iKentoo and more).

Yoco POS system includes the free Yoco App, free cloud desktop software, and additional hardware accessories to pair with the card machines.

Jump to Card Machines List↑

On the other hand, non-POS card machines tend to be more advanced and can function entirely on their own – without the need for phone or POS pairing at all.

Therefore, If you’re looking for a more expandable setup, a POS card machine might be the better option.

On the other hand, if you prefer a more minimal setup, a non-POS machine could be the way to go.

While both POS and non-POS machines have their pros and cons, it doesn’t really make them that different in real life.

Just like Android and iPhones, they all do the same things but operated slightly differently.

To help you make an informed decision, check out the summary table below:
